It has been four years since the PS5 launched, and the addition of new variants to its family of accessories has been slow. I remember the PS4 generation and the droves of colourful controllers that came with it. The newly launched Chroma Indigo DualSense controller reminds me of that time when Sony was more open to playing with its brand identity in its console lineup.
The Chroma Indigo controller comes in a mix of shades between deep blue and shiny purple. A multichromatic finish across its body gives it both an industrial yet artistic feel, but it doesn’t feel like a toy the way many DualShock 4 controllers did.
It doesn’t matter how purple it sways in marketing images, in real life it looks more blue to me, which is a good thing as I prefer it that way. While it occupies the same volume and mass as the regular DualSense controller, it commands a bigger presence in my hand.

Of course, I still love my Astro Bot limited edition Dualsense controller, also sent to me by Sony as a vote of confidence in the wonderful game. The only issue is that it’s too white for me to use in sweaty gaming sessions. The Chroma Indigo controller solves that issue, even if its glittery exterior forgoes the miniature PlayStation symbols found on the regular DualSense.
Personally, I prefer its colours over the 30th-anniversary limited edition controller, but that’s just me. I like the bolder colours with a modern design more than the nostalgic but muted grey undertones.
The matte finish gives it a premium feel in the hand, and the heft ensures it won’t slip down when mashing combos in couch co-op games. I don’t have the Chroma Indigo PS5 console covers to pair with it, but I’m sure it makes for a stylistic aesthetic. Now if only Sony would give us PS5 home screen themes to go along with it!
Functionally it is the same as the regular DualSense controller. You still get the immersive haptic feedback reverberating throughout the controller to ground you in a game’s environment. The adaptive triggers let you feel the pull of a gun’s trigger in Returnal, a bowstring in Horizon Forbidden West, and the tension in your swing in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.
