Marvel Studios has finalized a long-coveted deal with Director Taika Waititi which will see him return to direct the next Thor movie. The New Zealander director who shot to fame with indie films like Hunt For The Wilderpeople & What We Do In The Shadows saw blockbuster success when he helmed 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok, widely regarded as the best Thor movie in the franchise.

The deal, however, does have some caveats. Waititi has long been developing a live-action adaptation of the classic anime Akira for Warner Bros. and with this deal, it seems like that film’s development will be put on hold. The timing of the news might come as a surprise to some as Marvel Studios is prepping for its San Diego Comic-Con presentation which is at the end of this week. In all fairness, we might even get a public announcement from the man himself, Kevin Feige during the studio’s panel.

The news comes courtesy of The Hollywood Reporter. Currently, Marvel hasn’t announced any release date for the upcoming Thor 4 but it will be interesting to see where Chris Hemsworth’s God of Thunder will land. The last we saw of the character was in this summer’s Avengers: Endgame where we saw him joining the Guardians of The Galaxy. It seems like he won’t be popping up in that film, after all, especially considering how James Gunn was working on the script long before Endgame had entered production.
