Here's What The Rumored Social Network Sequel Might Be About

It’s been over 8 years since the release of The Social Network, and yet it still remains one of the most important an not to mention, well made films of the 21st century. The film stars Jesse Eisenberg, who plays the eccentric computer geek/genius Mark Zuckerberg and it paints a semi-realistic story of the rise of Facebook. The news that there may be a sequel is incredibly exciting news to film-lovers like me, and it could not have come at a better time. Despite Facebook not being as much of a social media influencer as it was in 2010, it has been in the news a lot, and there could be a very interesting story to tell.

So if you haven’t heard the news, the story goes that Scott Rudin, the producer of the film sent multiple e-mails to prolific scribe, Aaron Sorkin with an attachment reading, “Isn’t it time for a sequel?” One good thing we’ve learned out of this is that it will be Sorkin himself who will be charged with writing the script. The Social Network won Aaron Sorkin an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay (and what a screenplay it was!), and there could be no one better to pen down the second one.

However, it’s not all good news. According to me, The Social Network was the greatest marriage between screenwriter and director, at least in a long time. The film just wouldn’t have been as good if it wasn’t David Fincher at the camera. Fincher and Sorkin are capable of dancing to a tune that no one else could follow, working off each other to create a modern masterpiece. Collaboration at it’s best. The sad news is that Fincher is currently set to direct World War Z, starring long-time compatriot Brad Pitt. The producers of the film Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner have confirmed that filming would begin in June 2019, with Fincher behind the camera. So it looks like the dynamic duo most probably won’t be reuniting for this one.

It is unlikely that most of the cast will be carried forth to the sequel, but the inclusion of Jesse Eisenberg to play his role again seems necessary. Jesse Eisenberg’s involvement in future DCEU films is cloudy, as he himself does not know if he is going to reprise the role of Lex Luthor, hopefully making him free for shooting.

The Social Network Movie

The only thing we can do as viewers is place our trust in the hands of producer Scott Rudin, who has a good eye for finding directorial talent. If not Fincher, I wouldn’t mind Bennet Miller being given the job, considering he already has experience working with a Sorkin script (Moneyball).

The Social Network is a beloved movie by film fans all around. If there ever is a sequel greenlit, I don’t think anyone would complain.
