Cyberpunk 2077 is possibly the most anticipated upcoming video game in years. That’s not an understatement. And what, according to Hollywood, is the next big thing? Video game adaptations. And according to Mike Pondsmith, creator of Cyberpunk 2020 (the tabletop RPG that inspired Cyberpunk 2077), a film adaptation of his property just might be on its way.

In an interview with Video Game Chronicle, Pondsmith had the following to say regarding a potential Cyberpunk movie:
“I can’t really say anything on [movie rights]. But with Keanu Reeves being tied up in things, it’s become much more of a possibility.”
Of course, this does not guarantee that a film adaptation will come out, but as we’ve seen with CD Projekt Red’s previous efforts, Hollywood studios just might be looking out to see how the game performs before jumping on to produce a movie. After all, we are getting The Witcher, produced by Netflix and starring Superman himself- Henry Cavill. A few years ago, that might have seemed like a dream, but with the abnormal success of the Witcher games, which are inspired by the books, it’s finally getting the live-action treatment.

Let’s take a look back. The majority of these live-action adaptations haven’t really been up to the mark. In fact, most of them are plainly bad. However, as was the case with 2018’s Tomb Raider, audiences want to see a video game adaptation with compelling characters. While The Witcher series is well known for its excellent cast of interesting characters, things tend to get a bit muddy with Cyberpunk. The game is a continuation of ideas and narrative from Cyberpunk 2020, a tabletop RPG game by Mike Pondsmith.
As such, Keanu Reeves plays Johnny Silverhand, lead singer of the band Samurai. You can actually check out some of their in-game music here. As stated by the game’s developers, Reeves plays an important part in the game, second only to the main character. When asked about whether the game will have any more Hollywood actors in secret roles, Pondsmith decided to not comment on it. This only leads to speculation on whether CD Projekt Red has any more surprises left for us. As we’ve seen throughout the years, it seems like more and more actors are turning towards videogames.

While it may be some time before we get any news regarding a potential Cyberpunk movie, it’ll surely be worth the wait. With its clear Blade Runner impressions, it seems like we may not be far from when the movie does eventually come.
