Avengers: Endgame Vs Avatar: Will the MCU's Best Win at The Box Office?

Back when Avengers: Endgame came out, many believed it would beat Avatar to secure its place at the top of the international box office.

Back when Avengers: Endgame came out, many believed it would beat Avatar to secure its place at the top of the international box office. while the film did shatter almost every record, it still hasn’t been able to reach James Cameron’s magnum opus. However, things seem to be looking good for Endgame as Marvel Studio’s boss Kevin Feige has revealed plans of a re-release next week!

Yes, Avengers: Endgame will be getting a re-release, or rather an expansion, in the following weeks. The new edition will boast a few new post-credits scenes, as well as a Stan Lee tribute.

How Much Does Avengers: Endgame Need to Beat Avatar?

Avengers: Endgame Special Look | Phase 3

Currently, Avatar still reigns supreme at the Box Office, with a total gross of $2,787,965,087 as per Box Office Mojo. Endgame, on the other hand, has raked in an impressive $2,745,374,322, falling roughly $44 million behind Avatar. That already makes Endgame the second highest grossing film of all time. However, considering the fact that Disney owns both properties, thanks to its FOX acquisition, it’s no surprise that the Mouse House will be the real winner here regardless of which film comes out on top.

While most people who would have been interested in watching the film have already seen it, an extended edition will certainly invite hardcore fans to pay up again for another screening. It is not clear though whether the film’s re-release is going to be global or just focused in North America. Considering the additional footage, I’d wager that Marvel would be looking at an international release.

Endgame’s re-release Will Help Spider-Man Far From Home

Spider-Man: Far From Home, the sequel to 2017’s Homecoming releasing on July 5th, deals with the aftermath of Endgame. While initial analytics suggest that the film has a good chance of making it to the billion-dollar club, a push from the re-release will certainly help both parties. Captain Marvel also enjoyed a boost in viewership towards the end of its theatrical run due to the impending release of Endgame and the same could certainly apply here.

In any case, it’ll be interesting to see where Endgame lands. While “2nd highest grossing film of all time” isn’t a bad place to be, it certainly would say a lot about long-term franchise building if it does manage to beat Avatar.
