As Disney+ gears up to launch itself as the fancy new streaming service this year, a lot of interesting projects have started to take shape. The latest of these is apparently a new series based on the Marvel What If? comic-book series. The report comes from Slash Film, which says that Marvel Studios is producing the new series to be aired exclusively on Disney+.
As the website reports:
We have exclusively learned that Marvel Studios will be producing a new television series for the Disney+ streaming service based on the popular What If comic book series. The new animated show will be overseen by Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios, but the stories will not be canon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Hit the jump to learn more about the What If TV series.
Kevin Fiege Marvel Studios Head
As comic-book fans would know, the What If banner was used my Marvel Comics to tell stories that did not fit in their mainline continuity. These stories would explore seemingly bizarre questions such as “What if Spider-Man had joined the Fantastic Four?” or “What if Daredevil Had Become an Agent of SHIELD?”.
While the Marvel Cinematic Universe has always maintained a strict continuity, the idea of multiple universes existing has been mentioned time and again. Marvel Studios head Kevin Fiege has reiterated that they’ve been looking at ways to explore more stories to tell on the Disney+ platform, without disrupting the schedule of their movie studio. Perhaps a What-If series will take the lead on that?
